Okay, so a dragon is technically not an animal even though its listed with the animal drawing tutorials. But it is quite “animal-like” even if it really never existed in the first place. Of course, dragons come in all different shapes and sizes, and you’re only limited by your creativity in how you decide to draw one.

The following step by step tutorial is merely one way you may decide to draw a dragon.

Step 1 – Draw Three Shapes to Define The Form of the Body

We’ll start by drawing three shapes for the core of the dragon’s body. The first shape is a diagonal oval. From the oval, we’ll draw two additional shapes for the first part of the neck.

Step 2 – Draw a Shape for the Head and Lines for the Wings

In this step, we’ll extend the form of the main part of the dragon by adding a line that is similar to a “half-oval” for the lower part of the body. We’ll also add a couple of shapes for the arms and an oval for the head. A few lines are also drawn for the mouth and snout as well as the beginnings of the wings.

Step 3 – Draw the Claws and More Lines on the Wings

Next, we’ll draw a couple of shapes for the claws of the dragon and a shape for the hind leg. Lines are also added for the “ribs” of the wings. We’ll also draw a couple of triangles for the ears. The bottom of the jaw is defined with a line and one is added for the tongue. We can also draw a shape for the visible eye.

Step 4 – Finish the Bottom of the Wing, the Hind Leg, and The Additional Wing

Lines are added to the bottom of the wing to finish off the shape. A line is also drawn down the neck and through the body. The rest of the mouth is defined with an additional line and a second wing is drawn. In order to make the dragon appear grounded, will add a cliff. The hind leg is also completed with a couple more shapes.

Step 5 – Finish the Dragon

Now we have enough information to complete the drawing. All that’s left to do is to add the details. We’ll add a few textural marks to the skin to make it look “scaly”. A few lines are added to create a bit of shadow.

The inside portion of the mouth is darkened and lines are added to the cliff to make it appear rocky. Don’t forget the tail! It is added in this step as well. Remember, at each step of the drawing, you can customize your dragon any way that you like.
